Tithes and Offering: The Concept of Giving

We were taught in the church the concept of giving our tithes and offering. We have this golden rule that the 10% of what you have received will be given back to the Lord as your offering.

Aside from this, learn more about the beautiful lessons God taught us through giving our 10%.

About honesty, desire, and willingness

We should remember that it is not about the amount.

Wait! What? I thought it’s the 10% of what you have received, then you will say that it is not about the amount?

There are times that we’re ashamed of the amount we will give to the church. But we should not worry about it. Remember this verse from

2 Corinthians 9:7 “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

It is not about the amount, it is about the honesty, desire, and willingness to give back to our Almighty God. As long as you’re honest and driven by your willingness and cheerful heart, then God will be happy and pleased about it.

Compassionate Heart

With our current situation, it feels like it’s difficult to show kindness and compassion to others. Yet in giving, we learned how to share our blessings with others. Regardless if you’ll receive something or not. Regardless if that person deserves your kindness or not. Regardless if that person is kind to you or not. Let us always offer our compassionate heart.

Ephesians 4:32 reminded us that, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Let’s live with a compassionate heart that understands others and their troubles, and will reach out to others no matter what. Let our compassionate and giving hearts resonate in this selfish world.

Dependent to God

With simple giving, we were unconsciously taught how to let go of material things and depend only on God. Have faith only in God.

Proverbs 21:26All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing.”

Whenever we give, we also put out faith in God that no matter what, He will never leave us. Material things which easily fades don’t matter anymore. We no longer ask for more things because we have already entrusted everything to God. It is also an act of faith, wherein we trust the Lord wholeheartedly with everything we have and do.

How beautiful that in giving, we learned to be dependent on God and not embrace material things too much.

Putting God First

Giving is putting God first above all else. If we were used to setting aside 10% of our income, then we are learning it. You’re learning how to put God first over anything.

Matthew 6:33But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

One of the lessons of tithing is to teach us to always put God first in our lives. As they say, put God first and you will never be last.

The concept to be practice

See how simple tithes and offering unravels beautiful traits that we must possess for us to be disciplined Disciples of Christ who will be a blessing to others. The concept of giving leads the way for us to be Christ-like. If you’re an honest steward of Christ then continue it, so you can touch others’ lives and be a living testimony to them. Give and it will surely come back to you. Overflowing and unexpectedly.
